United States Gypsum Co. In Empire To Shut Down
The United States Gypsum Co. plant in the northern Washoe County town of Empire will idle operations by the end of January. It may re-open in the future. But for now, 93 employees will have to be laid off from their jobs.
Story 5 Comments Font Size: A continued sluggish economy is forcing the landmark sheet rock and plaster plant in the northern Washoe County town of Empire to idle operations until further notice.
By the end of January, 93 employees will be out of work in a town where United States Gypsum Co. has been the only significant employer since 1923.
"The business is just not there right now, so this what we have to do until things get better," said Mike Sphilman, plant manager, who has worked at the Empire plant for four years.
Employees at the Empire plant were notified about the shut down Thursday morning. Sphilman said the plant may re-open if business conditions improve in the future.
